MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) racked up five RBI's as the Saint Anselm College softball team split a doubleheader with the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at South Athletic Fields. The Hawks took the first game 4-2, before dropping game two, 8-3.
The Hawks move to 11-10 on the season, including 3-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Golden Knights are now 6-15, 2-8 NE-10.
The Hawks got it going early in the first. An error and a single by senior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) had runners at first and second when Giannino smacked a three-run homer. Senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) added an RBI single in the second to put Saint Anselm on top 4-0.
Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) recorded her fourth straight complete game and third straight win, seeing her consecutive scoreless innings streak come to an end at 18. She gave up five hits and walked five, while striking out seven.
The Hawks also received hits from freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.; 1-3) and senior Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.; 1-2)
In the second game, Saint Rose got one run in the first and then chased starter Brittnee O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.) from the game with three more in the second. The Golden Knights broke it open with another three-spot in the fourth.
Saint Anselm got one run back in the fourth on an RBI single by junior Megan Walsh (Randolph, Mass.), and two more in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer from Giannino, but Golden Knight starter Mikayla Wells was tough, tossing seven innings, while scattering eight hits and recording seven strikeouts.
O'Neill finished with 12/3 innings pitched, giving up five hits, one walk, and four runs. Sophomore Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I.) also pitched 12/3 innings, relinquishing three runs on five hits, while striking out one. Freshman Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) tossed the final 32/3 innings, giving up three hits and one run with five strikeouts.
Freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) went 3-for-4, while Glavin was a perfect 2-for-2 and junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H.) was 1-for-3.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, April 10 (12/2 p.m.), hosting another doubleheader against Le Moyne College at South Athletic Fields.
