MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) drove in three runs, but the Saint Anselm College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Le Moyne College on Sunday at South Athletic Fields. The Hawks dropped the first game, 9-6, in 10 innings, before losing the second game, 7-3.
The Hawks fell to 11-12 on the season, including 3-5 in Northeast-10 play, while the Dolphins improved to 9-13, 7-3 NE-10.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one on RBI doubles by junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H.) and Boucher, before an illegal pitch scored Boucher. Leading 3-1 in the fourth, Boucher knocked in a run with a single to put her team on top by three.
After Le Moyne had cut it to 4-3, Scafidi homered to left-center in the sixth to give the Hawks some breathing room. Le Moyne tied it in the seventh on a two-out two-run double by Barb Shea.
In the fourth extra frame, the Dolphins struck for four runs to take a 9-5 lead. The Hawks grabbed one back on an RBI single by Boucher, but that was as close as they would get.
Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) started and went 71/3, giving up five runs on nine hits. She struck out two and walked one. Freshman Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) took the loss, going 22/3, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits, while striking out two.
Boucher went 4-for-5 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored. Scafidi was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored.
Le Moyne led 7-0 in the seventh when sophomore Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) and freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. McEachern later scored on an error by the Le Moyne leftfielder to make it 7-3, but the Dolphins eventually sealed the win and the sweep of the doubleheader.
Boehn started and went four innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Boehn (2-4) walked two and struck out two. Freshman Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) tossed the final three innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, while striking out one.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 12 (3/5 p.m.) when they play host to Southern New Hampshire University in doubleheader action at South Athletic Fields.
