Softball Drops Doubleheader to Cross-Town Rival, SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) drove in three runs, but the Saint Anselm College softball team was swept by Southern New Hampshire University at South Athletic Fields on Tuesday afternoon. SNHU won the first game, 3-1, before capturing game two, 10-2, in six innings.

The Hawks drop to 11-14 on the season, including 3-7 in Northeast-10 action, while the Penmen improve to 11-17, 9-5 NE-10.

In the first game, the Penmen scored two in the fourth on a two-run home run by Melissa Vitagliano and added another run in the six after a solo shot from Elena Anderson. Saint Anselm grabbed one back in the sixth when Boucher homered to left-center with one out.

That would be as close as the Hawks would get, however, as SNHU starter Kelsey Griffin (6-4) allowed just the one run on one hit over seven innings. She struck out six and walked five.

Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) was nearly just as good as she also went the distance, while giving up three runs on three hits. Dalton (7-5) struck out three and walked three.

Things were not as tight in game two as the Penmen led 7-0 after three frames and had chased starter Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) from the game. The Hawks jumped on the board in the bottom half of the third on a Boucher double down the left field line, but SNHU blew it open with three more in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.

Boucher again doubled down the left field line in the bottom half of the sixth to drive in her team's second run of the contest, but Southern New Hampshire starter Dolores Mattice would close the door to give the Penmen the win in six innings.

Mattice (5-4) tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out six and walking three.

Boehn (2-5) lasted 21/3 innings, relinquishing five runs on eight hits and a walk. Sophomore Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I.) gave up five runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking three over 32/3.

Boucher was 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of RBI. She finished the day 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.

The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 14 (3/5 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University in doubleheader action at South Athletic Fields.
