Softball Tops Bentley in Doubleheader Sweep

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A complete team effort carried the Saint Anselm College softball team in a doubleheader sweep of Bentley University on Thursday afternoon at South Athletic Fields. The Hawks won the first game 11-0 in five innings, and took game two, 2-1.

The Hawks move to 13-14 on the season, including 5-7 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons fall to 10-12, 3-9 NE-10.

The first game was a tightly-fought battle until the third inning, when the Hawks nearly hit for the cycle. Senior Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.) drew a walk and stole second, followed by an RBI double from junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H.), an RBI triple from freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.), and a two-run homer from senior Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) that put the Hawks up 4-0. The Hawks then let loose with the bats in the fourth, putting up another seven runs.

Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) tossed yet another complete game shutout, her fifth of the year. She held the Falcons to just three hits, giving up only one walk and striking out six.

The Hawks also received offense from senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.; 2-3), sophomore Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.; 2-3, 2 RBI), freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.; 1-2, 1 RBI), and junior Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.; 1-3, 2 RBI).

Saint Anselm got things going in the second inning of game two with a Galavotti single, which Fay followed with an RBI single of her own. The Falcons answered back to knot the game at one in the third. The Hawks then went ahead for good in the fifth when McEachern singled to left field to score Glavin, who singled and stole second for her second theft of the day.

Dalton (9-5) earned the win in her six innings of work, giving up seven hits and a run while striking out eight. Freshman Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) pitched the seventh, giving up just one hit to earn her second save of the year.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 16 (1/3 p.m.) in a doubleheader at Pace University.
