Softball Belts Three Home Runs in 9-2 Win at Pace

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) and junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H.) each homered and drove in two runs to lead the Saint Anselm College softball team to a 9-2 victory against Pace University on Saturday afternoon at Pace Field. The two teams were scheduled to play two, but rain forced the postponement of the second game, which will be made up at a later date.

The Hawks improve to 14-14 on the season, including 6-7 in Northeast-10 play, while the Setters fall to 15-18, 7-10 NE-10.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After McEachern drew a leadoff walk, Scadfidi hit a two-run homer to left that gave her team the early lead. The Hawks doubled their advantage in the second when McEachern matched Scafidi with a two-run homer to left that scored junior Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.), who singled up the middle to lead off the inning.

The Hawks then blew it open with four in the third. Senior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored classmate Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.), who doubled to left-center leading off the inning. Then with freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) at second and sophomore Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) at third, Fay dropped down a bunt that scored Galavotti. Gauthier and Fay would then come around on an error by the catcher that made it 8-0.

Freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) hit a one-out solo shot to right in the fourth to make it 9-0. Pace continued the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the game would be called after six due to the rain.

Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) went six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Dalton (10-5) struck out five and walked seven.

McEachern was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Scafidi was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Boucher was 2-for-3 with a home run, RBI and a run scored. Fay was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Gauthier was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 17 (12/2 p.m.) when they travel to take on Adelphi University in doubleheader action.
