NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) and freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) each homered, but the Saint Anselm College softball team was swept by the University of New Haven in doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at the New Haven Softball Field. The Hawks were edged out, 5-3, in game one, before dropping the second game, 10-2, in five innings.
The Hawks fall to 20-22 on the season, including 12-15 in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers improve to 30-15, 18-10 NE-10.
In game one, New Haven jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings against Saint Anselm starter Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.), using a pair of home runs to do its damage. The Hawks responded with a solo home run to center off the bat of Gauthier in the fifth and an RBI single to left from freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) that made it 4-2.
The Chargers answered with one in the bottom of the sixth to widen the gap to three. Trafton then homered to left to lead off the seventh, but the Hawks went in order after that as New Haven captured game one.
Dalton (13-7) went the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Trafton, Gauthier and Boucher were all 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.) and junior Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.) were both 1-for-2.
New Haven again moved out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first two innings against starter Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I.). Saint Anselm cut it to 5-2 in the fifth when Fay hit a double to left that scored Trafton, who reached on an error to lead off the inning, and sophomore Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.), who followed with a double to left-center.
The Chargers would put the game away in the bottom half of the inning, however, hanging a five-spot on a pair of Saint Anselm relievers to walk off with the win.
DeSormier worked the first 12/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk. Freshman Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) pitched the next 21/3 and gave up four runs – two earned on four hits. Classmate Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) allowed an unearned run on one hit in 2/3 and of an inning.
Fay, Boucher and Galavotti each went 1-for-2, while Fay drove in a pair of runs.
The Hawks wrap up their regular season Sunday, May 1 (12/2 p.m.) when they take on Southern Connecticut State University in doubleheader action.
