MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) recorded a goal and five assists to lead the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team to a 16-11 win against American International College on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium in the team's regular-season finale on Senior Day.
The Hawks wrap up their season at 3-11 overall, including 3-7 in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets end their campaign at 1-13, 1-9 NE-10.
Trailing 1-0 just 2:15 into the contest, junior Alex Vinciguerra (Canton, Mass.) scored to knot the game at one. With 2:36 to play in the opening quarter, freshman Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) found the back of the net with his team down a man to even the score at 2-2.
AIC scored three of the first four goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead with 8:11 to play. Sophomore Mike Fiore (Norwell, Mass.) scored at the 9:09 to cut it to one.
Saint Anselm then exploded for five straight goals, sparked by a tally from sophomore Daniel Sullivan (Rumford, R.I.) at the 5:18 mark. Junior Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.) found the back of the net at 4:21 before junior Michael DeVita (Annandale, N.J.) and senior Ryan Henry (Norwood, Mass.) scored 22 seconds apart at the 2:45 mark. Steinetz found the back of the net again at 2:14 – just nine seconds after Henry – to make it 8-5.
AIC cut it two just two at the 1:42 mark, but Steinetz added another with 39 ticks left before the half to send the Hawks into the break leading 9-6.
After the Yellow Jackets started the third quarter with their seventh goal, Messner found the back of the net to put Saint Anselm on top, 10-7. Sophomore Ryan McQuaid (Scarborough, Maine) and Mallinson scored one minute apart with 6:40 to play in the third quarter to make it 12-8.
The Yellow Jackets sliced it to three at the end of the third quarter, but Henry scored just 17 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 13-9. Sullivan and McQuaid scored again to make it 15-10 before Henry closed the scoring with 2:37 to play to give the Hawks a 16-11 cushion.
Senior goalkeeper Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) made six saves, while Eric Whettell stopped 12 shots for AIC.
Saint Anselm outshot AIC, 52-36, and won 19 of the 29 faceoffs. The Hawks were 5-for-9 on their extra-man opportunities, while the Yellow Jackets were 3-for-7.
This marked the final game for seniors Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.), Justin Mambro (Hanover, Mass.), William Kussin (Concord, Mass.), Acone and Henry, who were all honored before the game.
