Sucharewicz Powers Baseball to 8-6 Victory at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) went 4-for-5 and drove in five runs as the Saint Anselm College baseball team earned an 8-6 victory against Bentley University on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at DeFelice Field.

The Hawks, winners of five of their last six, improve to 16-15 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 8-18.

Saint Anselm went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning on an RBI single to right by senior Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.). The Hawks put three more on the board the following inning on an RBI single to center by Sucharewicz and a two-run single to left by senior TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.).

=Bentley got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but Saint Anselm stayed one step ahead as it pushed two more across in the fourth on a two-run double to left by Sucharewicz that made it 6-1. The Falcons matched those two runs in the bottom of the fourth and then added two more in the fifth to slice their deficit to 6-5.

Sucharewicz' single to center in the top of the seventh gave the Hawks a much-needed insurance run as Bentley would grab a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-6. Sucharewicz kept the Hawks in front with an RBI double to right-center in the eighth.

Nine different pitchers tossed an inning for the Hawks. Freshman Derek Amoroso (Newport, Maine) went the first inning, giving up just one hit to earn his first win of the season. Sophomore James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) pitched the second, allowing a hit and walk. Senior Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) threw an inning, giving up one run on two hits. Sophomore William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) relinquished two runs on three hits in an inning of work, while junior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) gave up two runs – one earned – on two hits in the fifth.

After that, the bullpen slammed the door and did not allow a hit the rest of the way. Freshman Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) tossed a perfect sixth, while classmate Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) gave up an unearned run after issuing a walk in the seventh. Junior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) worked the eighth, walking one and striking out the only two batters of the game for the Hawks. Junior Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.) needed only four pitches to toss a perfect ninth inning and record his second save.

Panza went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Murphy was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Sophomore Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) were both 2-for-5, while Kelly scored three times.

The Hawks return to action Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. when they travel to take on Post.
