MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Meghan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) tallied four goals, including the 100th of her career, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Stonehill College, 20-5, at Melucci Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 1-5 on the season, including 1-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Skyhawks improve to a perfect 8-0, 5-0 NE-10.
Smith became just the fourth student-athlete in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone.
Kayla Green led Stonehill with five goals, while Sarah Galligan and Kelsey Reilly each scored three apiece.
Stonehill raced out to a 5-0 with 17:07 remaining in the first half, as Green bookended the five unanswered goals. Back-to-back scores from Smith and senior Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.) sliced the Saint Anselm deficit to three at the 8:18 mark, but Stonehill got one back with 6:13 to go and took the 6-2 lead into the locker room.
The Skyhawks came out and buried three goals to open up a 9-2 lead just five minutes into the second half, but Smith answered with three straight of her own – career goals No. 99, 100 and 101 – as the Hawks cut it back to four with 20:37 to play. Smith's 100th came on a free-position shot at the 22:12 mark.
Stonehill responded with 11 unanswered goals, however, to put the game out of reach.
Senior goalkeeper Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made 14 saves, while Rebecca Moore stopped five shots.
Stonehill outshot Saint Anselm, 43-15, including 27-8 in the second stanza. The Hawks held a 14-11 edge in draw controls, but turned the ball over 13 more times than the Skyhawks.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Assumption College (2-4, 0-4 NE-10).
