WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Megan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored four goals, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-13 decision to Assumption College at Multi-Sport Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 1-6 on the season, including 1-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-4, 1-4 NE-10.
Michelle Santos netted five goals to lead the way for Assumption.
Sophomore Britini Hickman (Farmington, N.H.) scored just one minute into the game, before classmate Bryanna Hayes (Mansfield, Mass.) netted another goal 55 seconds later to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Assumption responded with four straight tallies, including two from Santos, to grab a 4-2 lead with 14:14 remaining in the opening half. The Greyhounds led 6-4 when they erupted for four straight goals in the final 3:38 to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Smith opened the second half with a goal, and after Assumption answered, Smith netted two straight to cut it to 11-7 at the 25:30 mark. The Greyhounds pushed their lead back to five before Saint Anselm rattled off four in a row from Hickman, senior Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.), sophomore Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) and Smith to slice its deficit to just one with 15:57 left.
Assumption hit back with three of its own, however, to make it 15-11 with 8:36 remaining. Sophomore Lauren Alfis (Hanover, Mass.) and Santos traded scores before senior Kristen Vassalotti (South Easton, Mass.) cut it to three with her second goal of the game with 3:13 on the clock. That was as close as the Hawks would get, however, as Vassalotti's goal closed the game's scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made 16 saves, while Michelle Monahan stopped 11 shots.
Assumption outshot Saint Anselm, 38-34, including 22-12 in the opening half. The Greyhounds also held a 19-12 advantaged in draw controls. Both teams were a combined 3-for-18 in free-position opportunities.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Merrimack College.
