RINDGE, N.H. – Dan Kemp went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs, while Ryan Thompson tossed seven innings of one-run ball as No. 14 Franklin Pierce University defeated the Saint Anselm College baseball team, 5-1, at Pappas Field on Thursday afternoon. The game was originally schedule to be played at Saint Anselm, but recent bad weather and unplayable field conditions forced the location change. The contest officially counts as a home game for Franklin Pierce, despite the fact that Saint Anselm batted in the home half of each inning.
The Hawks dip below .500 for the first time all season at 8-9 (0-2 Northeast-10), while the Ravens improve to 16-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Just two days after being held to four hits in a one-run loss at Franklin Pierce, Saint Anselm could again muster only four hits against the Ravens. Thompson (5-0) scattered all four hits, while giving up an unearned run. He struck out eight and walked two. T.J. Ferguson and Sean Bergeron each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Franklin Pierce struck for two in the top of the second against starter Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). Kemp drove in the second run on a two-out single to left field. The Ravens added one in the fourth on a double to left by Kemp, and then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
Saint Anselm got one back in the sixth when senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) walked and moved to third on a double by classmate TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.), before scoring on a passed ball.
Kelly (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after relinquishing four runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out two and walked two. Junior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) gave up one run on three hits in two innings of relief, while senior Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) tossed a pair of hitless innings and struck out one.
Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, March 26 (12/3 p.m.) for a doubleheader at American International College.
