Manchester, NH (February 16, 2011)– Kristen McWhirter (Melvin Village, NH) scored a
career-high 29 points and Stonehill used a 14-0 run around halftime to top Saint Anselm 59-49 at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium Wednesday night. The run started with 5:30 remaining in the first half and continued two minutes into the second half, taking the Skyhawks from a slim four point lead to a wide 14 point margin over the Hawks.
The win improves Stonehill to 16-9 overall and 11-9 in the Northeast-10 conference. The Skyhawks also secured a first-round playoff game with the victory. Saint Anselm falls to 10-14 overall and 7-13 in the NE-10. The Hawks still need a win in at least one of their final two games to secure a spot in the NE-10 Tournament.
Megan Howard (St. Paul, MN) led the way for Saint Anselm with another double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Epiphany Smith (Springdale, AR) added 14 points in the loss.
Saint Anselm continues to try and improve its playoff position this week when the team travels to UMASS-Lowell for its final road test of the regular season. The Riverhawks are just a game in front of the Hawks in the Northeast-10 standings. For more information, log on to athletics.anselm.edu.
