BOSTON – Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored two goals as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team posted a 2-1 victory in their season-opening game against the Beacons of UMass Boston Friday evening at the Clark Athletic Center Ice Rink. With the victory, the Hawks open up their season with a 1-0 record, both overall and within the ECAC Men's East. The loss drops the Beacons to an 0-1 overall record and a matching conference record.
Vanous' game-winning goal came at 10:28 of the third period, granting the Hawks a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Collecting assists on Vanous' second goal of the contest were forwards John Daniels (Andover, Mass.) and Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.).
Saint Anselm opened the game's scoring with Vanous' first collegiate goal at 11:35 of the opening period. Intercepting the puck from a Beacons defender, Vanous forced the puck past UMass Boston goaltender Kevin Bendel to grant the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
Corey Chakeen of the Beacons scored an unassisted goal at 1:10 of the third period to knot the score at one apiece, a tie that would eventually be broken by Vanous.
Hawks goaltender Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) turned aside 37-of-38 shots on goal in a complete game victory, his first of the season. Bendel halted 28-of-30 shots on net, drawing the loss in 59:31 of action.
Saint Anselm was 0-for-1 on the power play. UMass Boston was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
