Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Foss Powers Women's Ice Hockey Past Pilgrims, 7-1

HENNIKER, N.H. –
Andi Foss (Elko, Mich.) recorded her first career two-goal game as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team posted a 7-1 victory against the Pilgrims of New England College Monday evening at Lee Clement Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks improve to 5-3-0 overall and 4-3-0 within the ECAC Women's East.  The Pilgrims fall to 1-5-1 overall and to 1-3-1 within conference play.

Defenseman Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) opened the scoring for the Hawks within the first minute, potting her first goal of the season at 58 seconds.  Following a face-off victory by Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.), the puck was sent back to Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) who darted the puck back to the top of the slot.  A powerful blast beat Pilgrims goaltender Teraysa White for the first goal of the game for either side.

Foss potted her first goal of the season at 10:03 of the first period to lift the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.  A puck was fired on net by a Hawks player and the rebound spilled out toward the left post to Foss.  Elevating the puck just enough over the pads of White, the puck slowly crossed the goal line for the score.

Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored her third goal of the season at 1:33 of the second period, placing the Hawks ahead by a 3-0 margin.  Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) fired a shot on net that was turned aside by White.  Crashing the net, Zappen flipped the puck top-shelf for the third goal of the contest for Saint Anselm.

Giarrusso tallied her second marker of the season at 7:46 of the middle stanza for the Hawks fourth goal of the contest.  Picarello wristed a shot on goal that was halted by White and the ensuing rebound fell directly down to the ice.  Crashing the right post, Giarrusso pushed the puck home for the goal.

Picarello added a goal of her own at 16:34 of the second period, giving Saint Anselm a five goal cushion exiting second period play.  From within the right wing corner, Giarrusso won a puck battle that freed the puck to Picarello, who wrapped the puck around the right side of the cage for the score.

Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) 12/26-2 scored her second goal of the season at 19:02 of the second period as Saint Anselm recorded their sixth goal of the game.  With the puck cycling back to the top of the slot, Zevnik wound up and fired a shot on goal that beat Pilgrims goaltender Kristen Connors down low.

Samantha Hippern placed New England College on the board with an even-strength goal at 6:01 of the third period.  With the Hawks defense unable to clear the puck from the top of the crease, Hippern skated up the slot and fired a powerful blast that beat Saint Anselm goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) stick-side for the score.

Foss added her second goal of the season at 10:24 of the third period on the power play.  Winters fed the puck back to the right point to Zevnik.  Holding the puck for a moment, Zevnik slid the puck parallel to the blueline where it was gathered by Foss.  A powerful blast preceded Foss' second goal of both the season and the game.

Zappen (5-3-0) posted her fifth victory of the season, turning aside 12-of-13 shots on net.  White (1-5-0) drew the loss, her fifth of the season, turning aside 22-of-27 shots on goal before yielding to Connors.  In relief, Connors stopped 8-of-10 shots on goal.

Saint Anselm was 2-for-10 on the power play.  New England College was 0-for-1 with the extra skater.
