Herron Powers Hawks Past Purple Knights, 7-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. –
Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) recorded two goals and an assist as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team recorded a 7-1 victory over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College Friday evening at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks feature an overall record of 4-2 and a 3-2 ECAC Women's East record.  The Purple Knights remain winless on the season with an 0-4-1 record, both overall and within conference play.

Kaitlin O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 3:02 of the second period to lift the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.  Casey Breese (Suffield, Conn.) won an offensive zone face-off and wrapped the puck around the boards to Molly Corl (Georgetown, Mass.) near the left-side boards.  A shot on goal was turned aside by Purple Knights goaltender Erin Stevens, but the rebound spilled out to O'Brien who crashed the right post for the goal.

After a scoreless first period, Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season to place Saint Anselm on the board by a 1-0 score.  From the left wing corner, Corl sent the puck up to the top of the slot where Bouchie fired a shot that beat Stevens down low for the opening goal of the game for both sides.  Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) collected an assist on Bouchie's goal.

Herron scored her first goal of the game at 7:48 of the second period to increase the Saint Anselm lead to three.  Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) carried the puck behind the net from left to right and sent the puck toward the slot where it was fired on goal by a streaking Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.).  Herron, near the left post, tapped home the ensuing rebound for her fifth goal of the season.

Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) scored her first goal of the season on the power play at 10:19 of the second period, lifting Saint Anselm to a 4-0 lead.  Entrenched in the offensive zone on a power play, Tatu sent a pass to Zevnik at the top of the slot who one-touched the puck to Herron along the left wing boards.  Receiving the puck back from Herron, Zevnik shot the puck along the ice, beating Stevens down low for the fourth goal of the game.

Maire Bartkus scored the first Saint Michael's goal of the evening at 14:51 of the second period on the team's first shot on goal.  On the power play, Bartkus fired a shot on goal from the left point that beat Hawks goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) for the first Purple Knights strike of the evening.  Kristen Spulecki, who initially sent the pass to Bartkus from deep within the zone, collected the lone assist on the goal.

Winters scored her sixth goal of the season on the power play at 17:25 of the third period, lifting the Hawks to a 5-1 lead.  From the left point, Zevnik shot the puck on net that deflected off of a Purple Knights defender.  The puck spilled out to Herron near the left post who centered the puck to Winters who forced home the pass for the goal.

Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season 25 seconds after Winters' strike to elevate Saint Anselm to a 6-1 margin.  Corl, positioned within the left face-off circle, sent a cross-ice feed to Giarrusso near the bottom of the right face-off circle.  Giarrusso tucked the puck within the right post for her 39th career goal.

To conclude the Saint Anselm scoring on the evening, Herron scored her sixth goal of the season at 19:33 of the third period.  Winning consecutive puck battles along the left side boards, Herron skated to the left post.  Bridget Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.) fired the puck on net from a tough angle and the rebound spilled to Herron, who elevated the puck over the pad of Stevens for the final tally of the game for either side.

Zappen (4-2) collects her fourth victory of the season, turning aside six-of-seven shots on goal.  Stevens (0-4-1) draws her fourth defeat of the season, turning aside 36-of-43 shots on net.

The Hawks were 3-for-5 on the power play.  The Purple Knights were 1-for-2 with the extra skater.
