ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman Roy Mabrey (Belmar, N.J.) poured in 25 points to lead the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team to its first win of the 2011-12 season, 86-59, against Concordia (N.Y.) College at the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Nolan Gymnasium.
The Hawks, 104-99 losers to No. 23 C.W. Post in their first game at the tournament Saturday, even their record at 1-1, while the Clippers fall to 1-1.
Mabrey, who scored 26 points against C.W. Post, was an efficient 9-for-11 from the field, including a perfect 4 of 4 from behind the arc, and gathered three rebounds. Sophomore Allen Harris (Roslindale, Mass.) posted 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and two assists, while senior Jack Keough (Owego, N.Y.) tallied 16 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
The game was close early on, but after an Argelix Gil tip-in that put Concordia on top, 14-13 at the 12:37 mark of the first half, the Hawks crafted a 15-2 run that gave them a 28-16 lead with 6:43 left. A layup by freshman Andre King (Springfield, Mass.) at the 10:48 mark sparked the run and gave Saint Anselm the lead for good. A 3-pointer by Mabrey and a three-point play from sophomore John Nielsen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) pushed the lead to seven before a jumper from Harris, followed by another 3 and a basket from Mabrey finished off the run.
Leading 31-20 with 3:54 left, the Hawks rattled off seven straight points to push their lead to 18 where it would stay into the halftime break as they held a 46-28 advantage.
The Clippers climbed to within 14 in the first two minutes of the second half, but the Hawks reeled off a 12-2 run to take a 59-35 lead with just under 14 minutes to play. After Concordia made it a 21-point game, five straight points from Mabrey widened the Saint Anselm lead to 26 at 60-44 with 12:09 on the clock.
Just over a minute later, the Hawks would score seven straight, including a King free throw at the 7:48 mark that gave Saint Anselm its largest lead of the afternoon at 73-43. The Clippers would come back with seven straight of their own to close it to 23 with 6:58 remaining, and would get as close as 21 at 77-56 with 2:53 to go, but the Hawks would outscore Concordia 9-3 the rest of the way to seal the win. A King trey with 32 seconds left served as an exclamation point on the victory and closed the scoring.
Sophomore Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.) did a little bit of everything as he tallied four points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds. King finished with eight points and two rebounds.
The Hawks outshot the Clippers, 53.6 percent (30-56) to 39.3 percent (22-56), including 58.3 percent (7-12) to 23.1 percent (3-13) from behind the arc. The Hawks were also opportunistic as they netted 32 points off of 25 Concordia turnovers.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. when they open both their home and Northeast-10 slates by playing host to Stonehill College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
