MANCHESTER, N.H. - Keesen Howe (Norwich, Conn.) converted on a penalty kick opportunity early in the second half, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to the Chargers of the University of New Haven by a 2-1 margin Friday afternoon at Grappone Stadium. The Chargers conclude their season with a 5-9-3 overall record and a 4-8-1 record within the Northeast-10 Conference. The Hawks wrap up their season with a 6-10-2 overall record and a 3-9-1 conference record.
Joseph D'Antonio scored his fourth goal of the season after being awarded a penalty kick at 46:55 of the second half. Hawks goaltender Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came out of the goal to cut off the angle of a Chargers player but ended up fouling the player within the box. D'Antonio converted the opportunity to give New Haven a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Gui Dos Santos scored his second goal of the seaosn at 41:39 of the first period, granting the Chargers a 1-0 lead late in the period. Austin Coleman, from midfield, sent a ball up to Dos Santos, who split the two Hawks defenders and headed home the ball past Kotsopoulos for the goal.
Howe scored his seventh goal of the season, a career-high, at 52:10 of the second half to put Saint Anselm on the board. After Howe's initial attempt rang the right post, an infraction by the New Haven goaltender Jonathan Creem gave the Hawks another opportunity. Howe converted his second career penalty kick to halve the Chargers advantage.
Kotsopoulos, making his ninth career appearance in net for Saint Anselm, drew the loss (0-1-0) after making one save on two shots in the contest. Creem (4-3) collected the win by turning aside 10-of-11 shots on goal. Saint Anselm outshot the Chargers cumulatively by a 26-to-7 margin.
