RINDGE, N.H. - Despite Charlotte Tencza (Greenfield, Mass.) tying her career-high kill total with 21, the Saint Anselm College volleyball team fell by a 3-1 margin Tuesday evening. With the victory, the Ravens improve to a .500 winning percentage, capturing their 11th victory overall on the season (11-11) and improving to 5-6 within Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hawks drop to 7-14 overall and fall to 2-9 within conference play.
Tencza posted a team-high seven kills in the opening set in which the Hawks posted a 27-25 victory. With the score 25-24 in favor of Franklin Pierce, Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) recorded a kill to even the score at 25. Tencza recorded the next two kills of the set to clinch the victory. Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) assisted the last four kills for Saint Anselm to secure the first set victory.
Lauren Ross (Dracut, Mass.) and Tencza combined for six kills total in the second set, but the Hawks dropped the second set by a 25-19 margin. Defensively, Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) posted five digs defensively after posting eight by herself in the first set victory. Holland McNabb (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Tereschuk combined for three kills without making an error in the second set.
As a team, the Hawks made only two errors as a team and hit .441 combined, but fell to the Ravens by a 25-23 margin. Tencza contributed six kills of her own without making an error and Gustavson added four kills of her own in the third set loss. Steinwart added a service ace and contributed four digs defensively in the defeat. Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) came off the bench and added four digs to the effort.
Franklin Pierce captured the fourth and decisive set by a 25-21 score despite five more kills from Tencza. Kylie Kozlowski (Dracut, Mass.) added a service ace and two digs off the bench in the fourth set and Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) posted a solo block.
Cumulatively, Tencza led the Hawks charge with 21 kills, tying a career-high mark with 21 kills. Tencza posted 21 kills against Assumption on Oct. 25, 2008. Steinwart, serving as the Hawks primary setter, recorded 47 assists in the loss and Tereschuk added 22 of the Hawks 67 digs on the evening - a season-high dig total for the Hawks libero. Steinwart also set a career-high record with 13 digs.
Four different Ravens recorded double-digit kill totals as Natasha Rey led the team with 13 kills. Stephanie Svorinic assisted 44 Ravens kills and Lauren Miller notched 17 digs of her own.
