MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and became the program's all-time leading goal scorer as she lifted the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 4-3 victory against Bentley University on Thursday afternoon at Grappone Stadium in the team's Northeast-10 finale on Senior Day.
The Hawks win for the second time in three games to improve to 6-10 and close their conference record at 4-6. They also match their season high of four goals, which they set in a 4-1 win at Southern Connecticut State University on Oct. 15. The Falcons, who were 5-1 winners against the Hawks at home Sept. 6, fall to 8-8, 5-4.
After a scoreless first half of the opening stanza that was played primarily in the middle of the field, the Hawks jumped on the board in the 24th minute when sophomore Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) sent a drive from the right of the circle that found the back of the cage after freshman Bridget Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) made the feed off the penalty corner. The assist was Davis' seventh of the season, which is good for third on the program's single-season assist list and most ever by a freshman.
Bentley evened the game in the 28th minute when Stephanie Sideris received a feed from Kelsey Mattson after a scrum in front of the net and beat junior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) to tie it at one.
With the game still knotted at one in the 43rd minute, the Hawks went back on top when Sears received the feed off a penalty corner at the top of the circle and slid the ball to senior Morgan Seney (Bow, N.H.), who was camped in front of the cage and beat Bentley goalkeeper Julia Powell to make it 2-1.
The Hawks grabbed an insurance goal in the 50th minute when Katsikis converted a penalty stroke to make it 3-1 and move into a first-place tie for the most goals in school history.
Bentley would not go away, however, as Beth Maguire's shot snuck inside the right post, after collecting the rebound off a shot from Hanna Gerry, to make it 3-2 in the 53rd minute.
Katsikis answered back as she wasted no time toppling the record with her 20th career goal that made it 4-2 in the 61st minute. Katsikis corralled the rebound off a shot from senior Stephanie Chaisson (Methuen, Mass.) and fired it into the left side of the net.
Katsikis, who already owns the school records for both points and assists in a career, is having the best season ever by a Hawk. Katsikis continues to shatter the single-season points record with 39 and also owns the best single-season marks for goals and assists.
The back-and-forth continued as Bentley drew within one in the 66th minute when Kaitlyn Marcinek found a loose ball in front of the cage and lifted it into the top right corner.
The Hawks would kill off the final five minutes, however, including a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock, to seal the win.
Sullivan made three saves, while Powell stopped two shots.
With 10 penalty corners in the final game of the Hawks' "Corners for the Cure" breast cancer initiative, they finish with 29 penalty corners over the three games and have raised nearly $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Prior to the game, the Hawks honored their three-member senior class of Seney, Chaisson and Sara Sterling (Mansfield, Mass.).
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. when they take on Limestone College before wrapping up their season at Limestone on Sunday at noon against Bellarmine University.
