Buffalo, Minn. (January 7) -- The Saint Anselm Hawks women's ice hockey team was in Minnesota tonight to play the first of two weekend games. The Hawks were matched up with Saint Scholastica tonight, winning 3-2 in overtime on Kathryn Picarello's (West Roxbury, Mass) first goal of the season.
Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season at the 10:43 mark on passes from captain Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) and Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). The Hawks took the 1-0 into the locker room.
With just under two minutes played in the second period, Saint Anselm capitalized on a power play chance when Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) netted her third goal of the season. The Saints answered back with 8:20 reaming in the second period on a goal by Jordan Klimek (Hastings, Minn.) to cut the Hawks lead in half at 2-1.
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland) opened the scoring in the third period for the Saints to tie the game at 2-2, sending the game into overtime.
A costly Saint Scholastica penalty gave Picarello the opportunity to net the overtime winning goal at the 1:57 mark in the five-minute overtime period.
The Hawks out shot the Saints 34-17. Amy Zappen (Hunting Beach, Calif.) made 15 saves in the win.
Saint Anselm improves to 8-3 overall with the win. They will take on the College of Saint Benedict tomorrow at 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
