Portland, Maine (January 7) -- Greg Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) netted the game-winning overtime goal, the first score of his career, with 1:05 remaining against the University of Southern Maine tonight to give the Hawks a 4-3 victory.
The first 20 minutes belonged to Southern Maine as Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, ME.) scored the only goal of the period with just under four minutes remaining. Southern Maine goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) made nine saves in the period to keep Saint Anselm off the score sheet.
Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.) scored his fifth goal of the season to make the score 1-1 midway through the second period on assists by Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Tyler Savage (Carrollton, Texas). The Hawks added a second goal with 7:36 remaining on a power play by Pascal from Jim Toomey (Billerica, Mass.) to make the score 2-1. Less than a minute later, Southern Maine's Paul Conter (Woodbridge, ON.) capitalized on a power play opportunity, knotting the score at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.
Savage broke the deadlock after three-and-a half minutes into the third period on passes from Steve Mollo (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Andrew Kacz (North Dighton, Mass.). Southern Maine answered back with just over five minutes left on a David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) goal to send the game into overtime.
Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) was forced to make just one save in the overtime period before Crovo scored the game winner. Toomey and John Hyslip (Andover, Mass.) assisted on the goal to lift the Hawks to the win.
The Hawks, who are now 5-3 overall, will be on the road again tomorrow to take on 2-7 University of New England in an ECAC East matchup. The start time for the game is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
