Manchester, N.H. (January 11) -- Saint Anselm's women's ice hockey team continued its winning ways this afternoon, defeating NESCAC opponent Bowdoin College 3-2 in overtime to pick up its sixth straight win. Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) scored a hat trick, picking up her fifth, sixth, and seventh goals of the season.
This afternoon's game was the first true home game for the Hawks since December 4th, after playing twice in Minnesota this past weekend.
Winters scored the game winner just 53 seconds into the five-minute overtime period on a power play which carried over from the third period.
Emily Tang (Cambridge, Mass.) began the game scoring for Bowdoin in the first period with 8:35 left on the clock. The goal was her fourth of the year, and gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Winters collected her first goal of the game on a power play midway through the second period on passes from teammates Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) and Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.), tying the game at 1-1. Later in the second period, Dominique Lozzi (Reading, Mass.) took the lead back for Bowdoin at 2-1, which was taken into the second intermission.
With just under 2:30 left in regulation, Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) crossed the puck from right to left in the Saint Anselm end. The pass was snagged by Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.), who fed the puck to Winters, who in turn scored the game-tying goal falling down on the left side of the net. Bowdoin then picked up a penalty with just 24 seconds left in regulation, which carried over to the overtime period and led to the game-winning goal.
With the loss, Bowdoin falls to 7-4-1 overall, while the win increases the Hawks record to 10-3 overall.
The Hawks will take the ice again this weekend for a pair of ECAC East games on the road. They will first travel to Southern Maine of Friday afternoon in a 4:00 pm game. The Hawks then go to Plymouth State for a Saturday night matchup at 7:00 pm.
