Worcester, Mass. -- The Saint
Anselm men's soccer team traveled to Worcester, Mass. tonight to
take on conference opponent Assumption College. After time had
expired, the Hawks fell to the Greyhounds by a score of 1-0.
The game began in an up-and-down fashion, seeing quick counter
attacks from both sides, but each trip ended up with an empty
possession. The Hawks took two shots, compared to five by the
Greyhounds. Brandon Sullivan, (Halesite, N.Y.)
made just one save for Assumption, while Hawk goalkeeper Eric Moriarty
(Center Harbor, N.H.) saved all three shots taken by
Assumption.
The second half started much the same, with the Hawks having the
best early look around the 20-minute mark. Sullivan for Assumption
went to the ground inside the six-yard box to corral the ball
before any Saint Anselm players could put a shot away and the game
remained at 0-0.
The game remained scoreless until the 71st minute when
Scott Buckholz (Seymour, Conn.) scored the only
goal of the contest. Seymour shot from inside the 18-yard box on a
free header to score the Greyhounds first goal of the season. The
Hawks attempted to storm back late, getting a great look at goal
from a corner kick, but were unable to convert on the chance.
Assumption outshot Saint Anselm 17-7, putting six on goal.
Sullivan made a total of four saves for the Greyhounds, who start
the season off 1-0 (1-0, NE-10), while the Hawks begin the 2010
campaign 0-1 (0-1, NE-10).
The Hawks will next play in their home opener next Wednesday,
September 8th when they take on Southern Connecticut. The game is
scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
