South Bend, Indiana (September 17) -- The Saint
Anselm men's and women's cross country teams traveled to the
University of Notre Dame for the 2010 National Catholic
Championships on Friday. The women's team placed 12th among 25
Division II schools, while the men were 18th among Division II
teams.
The Saint Anselm women's team placed 12th of 25 Division II
teams and 22nd out of 35 overall teams from all divisions,
finishing the D2 results with 334 points. Leading the way was
standout freshman Katharine Meinertz (Smithfield,
R.I.), the reigning Northeast-10 Freshman Runner of the
Week. Meinertz was ninth among all Division II runners and the
second Division II freshman, finishing in a time of 19:16. Meinertz
was also 55th overall among runners from all divisions.
Other runners for the women's team placing in the top 100 were
Bianca Cuiffredo (Worcester, Mass.) in 48th
at 20:15, along with Stephanie Kearsley (Manchester,
N.H.) in 61st place in 20:37. Bellarmine won the
Divison II team championship with a total of 76 points.
In the men's race, senior Drew Matthews (Madison,
Conn.) was the top Saint Anselm finisher in 60th
place among Division II runners in a time of 27:40. Co-captain
Christopher Powers (Haverhill, Mass.) was
close behind in 68th place, just seven seconds back at 27:47,
followed by co-captain John Surabian (Saugus,
Mass.) in 100th place in 28:31. As a team, the Hawks
placed 18th out of 25 Division II teams and 28th out of all 35
teams from every division. Bellarmine won the men's title as well
for Division II, posting a total of 42 points.
