Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Hawks Outlast Purple Knights in Overtime Win, 17-16

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Led by four-goal efforts from Lauren Alfis (Hanover, Mass.), Tia Karon (Medford, Mass.) and Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.), the Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team outlasted the Purple Knights of Saint Michaels College in overtime, winning by a score of 17-16.  The win lifts the Hawks to 5-8 (3-7 NE-10), while the Purple Knights drop to 3-10 (3-7 NE-10).

Carrie Brophy opened the scoring for the Hawks just 16 seconds after the opening draw control, netting an unassisted goal at 29:44.  Lauren Alfis then followed her with an unassisted goal at 28:23 to take a quick 2-0 lead.  The Hawks held onto the lead for a brief period of time, but the Purple Knights then went on a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead at 20:04.  The Hawks tied it up at 17:54, and for the rest of the period, neither team went ahead by more than one goal at any given time.  At the end of the first half, the Hawks led 10-9.

Spenser Wolfe quickly knotted the score at 10 just 13 seconds into the second half, but the Hawks then went on their longest scoring streak of the game, as Emily Traicoff (Beverly, Mass.), Carrie Brophy, and Lauren Alfis notched three consecutive goals to take their largest lead of the game, 13-10.

The Purple Knights came within one with an unassisted goal by Alee Ramos at 11:05, but Shawna Walsh (Woburn, Mass.) put the Hawks back up 14-12 at 9:50.  However, in the final six minutes of play, Julia Heald and Alee Ramos each scored one for the Purple Knights to knot the score at 14 and send the game into overtime.

The Hawks took the lead at 2:07 in the first half of overtime, as Carrie Brophy converted a perfect pass from Lauren Alfis to put the Hawks up 15-14.  However, with six seconds remaining in the first half of OT, Joan Colloton notched an unassisted goal to tie the score once again.

Alee Ramos gave the Purple Knights a 16-15 lead right off the draw control at 2:45 in the second half of overtime, but Lauren Alfis netted an unassisted goal at 1:49 to tie the score for the 11th time in the game.

As time ticked down off the clock, Shawna Walsh held onto the ball, looking for a chance to score.  At 1:09, she was fouled inside the eight meter fan, and set up for a free position shot.  When the whistle blew, she momentarily lost her footing, causing goalkeeper Sandra Palumbo to come out of the net to try and force a turnover.  Walsh quickly recovered and faked out Palumbo, flipping the ball up and over her to score the game-winning goal and give the Hawks their first victory since April 10th, when they came back to defeat American International, 16-12.

Lauren Alfis led both teams, scoring seven points on four goals and three assists. Karon and Brophy also scored four goals, Emily Traicoff and Shawna Walsh each added two more, and Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.) notched the remaining Hawk goal.  Purple Knights Alee Ramos and Julia Heald both scored four goals as well, and Heald added an additional assist.

Hawk goalkeeper Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made 11 key saves in the game and Sandra Palumbo turned aside 10 shots.

The Hawks conclude the 2010 season on Saturday, May 1, when they host the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm, but be sure to arrive early as the Hawks will be honoring seniors Tia Karon, Katie O'Brien (Peabody, Mass.) and Alyson McDonough (Brunswick, Maine) for their contributions to the Saint Anselm women's lacrosse program prior to the game.
