Manchester, N.H. (May 1) -- On Senior Day on
Saturday afternoon, the Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team
ended the 2010 season with a 21-13 victory over Southern
Connecticut in Northeast-10 play. Saint Anselm wraps up the season
with a 6-8 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Northeast-10.
Prior to the start of today's game, the Hawks honored
seniors Tia Karon (Medford, Mass.), Alyson McDonough (Brunswick, Maine) and Katie O'Brien (Peabody, Mass.) for their contributions to
the Saint Anselm women's lacrosse program during their
four-year careers.
Saint Anselm got on the board just 12 seconds in as sophomore
Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn, Va.) took the opening
draw control and scored for the 1-0 lead. SCSU's
Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.), one of seven
seniors for the visitors, scored an unassisted goal of her own with
25:21 left in the first half to tie things up early on. Karon got
things going just under four minutes later with the first of her
six goals and the Hawks built the lead to 4-1.
With the Hawks leading 5-2 with 16:44 left in the opening
period, KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) scored
twice for the Owls, along with an unassisted goal from
Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.), to tie the game
at 5-5. The two teams went back and forth over the remainder of the
half, but after goals from freshman Kaleigh Hunt (Sudbury,
Mass.) and Karon in the final minutes of the half, the
Hawks took an 11-8 lead into the halftime break.
Starting with a goal from McDonough early in the second half,
the Hawks opened the period on a 6-1 scoring run and lead by a 17-9
margin with 17:30 left in the game. Three straight goals by
McCafferty got the Owls to within 17-12, but they got no closer as
the Hawks came away with the 21-13 victory.
Junior goalie Katherine O'Hara (Norwell,
Mass.) finished with 15 saves in the victory, while
Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) made a
career-high 21 stops while falling to 0-13 on the season for the
Owls.
Karon led the Hawks with six goals, along with three each from
junior Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.) and freshmen
Bryanna Hayes (Mansfield, Mass.) and
Britini Hickman (Farmington, N.H.).
Karon ends her career at Saint Anselm with 64 career caused
turnovers, second on the all-time list. Her 28 caused turnovers
this season also ties Beth Millian for the second-highest
single-season total in school history. With today's 15-save
outing, O'Hara now holds the single-season Saint Anselm saves
mark at 182, giving her three of the top six single-season totals
in school history.
McCafferty had five goals for the Owls, along with four goals
for Monfredo.
Southern Connecticut ends the season winless at 0-13 overall and
0-11 in Northeast-10 play.
