Manchester, N.H. (April 21) -- Saint Anselm ran
its winning streak to three straight with an 8-5 win over visiting
Franklin Pierce on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference
play. The Hawks improve to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10,
while the Ravens drop to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in the league.
The Hawks got things going early as senior Ryan McDonald (Bow,
N.H.) scored with 8:40 left in the first quarter. The two
teams traded goals for the remainder of the first quarter as the
game was tied at 2-2 after the opening period. Saint Anselm
dominated the second quarter as McDonald scored early on an assist
from Matt O'Connell
(Charlestown, Mass.), along with unassisted goals by
Joe
Robichaud (Madison, Conn.) and Ryan Henry (Norwood,
Mass.).
Franklin Pierce cut the lead down to 5-3 in the opening minutes
of the third on a goal from Nate Wood, but the
Hawks extended the lead to 7-3 on a goal from freshman Daniel
Sullivan (Rumford, R.I.) and an unassisted score from
O'Connell.
The Ravens made it a 7-4 game on a goal from Wood before Saint
Anselm senior Kevin
DeBenedetto (Reading, Mass.) forced a Raven turnover
and took the ball in for an unassisted goal and the 8-4 lead.
Jimmy McInnis scored with 2:03 left for the
visitors to account for the 8-5 final.
Junior goalie Pat Acone (Bow,
N.H.) posted 13 saves in his sixth win of the season,
while Shea Campbell made 15 saves in the loss.
McDonald led the Hawks with two goals, while O'Connell had one
goal and three assists. Overall, Saint Anselm outshot Franklin
Pierce by a 33-28 margin in the game.
Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday afternoon, traveling
to American International for a 1 p.m. start in Springfield,
Mass.
