Manchester, N.H. (April 14) -- Led by a
three-hit outing from senior Matt Stone (West Roxbury,
Mass.) and an eight-inning gem by sophomore John
Healy (Cranston, R.I.), the Saint Anselm baseball team won
its fourth game in the last six outings with a 6-2 win over
visiting Merrimack at Sullivan Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on
a two-RBI to right field by Stone. TJ Murphy (Reading,
Mass.) reached on a one-out single to right center and
advanced to second on a passed ball before Sucharewicz walked.
Stone roped his sixth double of the season over the outstretched
glove of the right field to give the Hawks the early edge.
The game stayed that way until the top of the third with a pair
of unearned runs. Junior Paul Arce (West Hartford,
Conn.) reached base on walk, followed by a single to right
by sophomore Paul Manganiello (Levittown, N.Y.) to
put a pair of runners on base. After both runners moved up on a
throwing error, Mark O'Flynn (Ipswich, Mass.)
drove Arce in with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
Brendan Pyburn (Peabody, Mass.) sacrifice bunted
just in front of home plate and Manganiello came home from third to
tie things up at 2-2.
The Hawks regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Matt Garczynski (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored on a
one-out single by Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.).
Garczynski reached on a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed
ball and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring the
go-ahead run.
Saint Anselm added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a
two-out double to right by freshman Rett Ostafin (Avon,
Conn.) to account for the 6-2 final.
Healy was spectacular on the mound for the Hawks, going eight
innings and allowing just four hits and a pair of unearned runes
while striking out eight. Senior David Giarrusso (Cranston,
R.I.) pitched the ninth, striking out two, to preserve the
6-2 final.
Freshman Brett Julian (Weymouth, Mass.) took
the loss the for the Warriors, falling to 1-1 overall.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 9-20 overall and 7-9 in the
Northeast-10, while Merrimack now sits at 12-11 overall and 7-9 in
the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, April 16th as
the Hawks host Bentley for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30
p.m. at Sullivan Park.
