Albany, N.Y. (April 10) -- Blasting 24 hits in
two games on Saturday afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team
swept Saint Rose by finals of 12-4 and 8-6 to improve to 12-12
overall and 5-5 in Northeast-10 play. Saint Rose is now 3-17
overall and 1-9 in the Northeast-10.
In game one, the Hawks took advantage of four Golden Knight
errors and had 12 hits of their own in the 12-4 victory. Saint
Anselm jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second, lead by a
three-run homer from junior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham,
Mass.). After two unearned runs in the third, the Hawks
added two more in the fourth behind the second homer of the game by
McEachern, a two-run shot. Saint Anselm closed out its scoring in
the seventh with three runs on four hits, including RBI doubles by
freshmen Amanda Massad (Grafton, Mass.) and
Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.), along with an
RBI single by senior Moira McCabe (Brookline,
N.H.).
Senior Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) took the
win to improve to 5-4 as she went seven innings, scattering 12 hits
with four earned runs and one strikeout. Nicole
Traylor went three innings as the Saint Rose starter,
allowing four earned runs, six total, while scattering six hits.
The second game started with a two-run Saint Anselm first
inning, led by a two-RBI single down the right field line by senior
Lizzy LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.). Nikki
Woodard put the Golden Knights in front in the bottom of
the inning with a grand slam, but the Hawks tied the game again in
the fifth inning with a pair of runs. McEachern blasted her third
homer of the day to make it a 4-3 game, followed by an RBI double
down the right field line by LeBrun that scored Jackie
Giannino (Beverly, Mass.).
Saint Rose answered with a two-run homer by Woodard for a
6-4 lead, but the Hawks came charging back with four runs in the
top of the sixth for the win. The Hawks got four runs on four hits,
led by a two-RBI double to center by Giannino.
Saint Anselm starter Shannon Dalton (Concord,
Mass.) lasted just 0.1 innings, allowing four earned runs,
before she was relieved by Massad. Massad went 5.2 innings in
relief to pick up her first career victory, along just two runs on
seven hits with three strikeouts. Lemire pitched a perfect seventh
for her first save of the season. Sarah Arbogast
went 5.1 innings in the loss, falling to 0-5 on the season.
McEachern finished with three home runs, four runs scored and
six runs batted in, along with three hits each by Giannino, LeBrun
and freshman Kylene Pease (Ashland, Mass.). All
three players had runs batted in, led by four RBI by LeBrun.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the team
takes on Le Moyne for a doubleheader in Syracuse, N.Y.
