Syracuse, N.H. (April 11) -- After dropping a
heartbreaking 9-8 final in game one on a walkoff two-run home run,
Saint Anselm rebounded to down Le Moyne by a 10-4 final in game two
to gain a split on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference
action.
Saint Anselm got off to a quick start as the first three batters
all reached on singles in the first. Junior Liz Trafton
(Berwick, Maine) reached on a bases-loaded walk to score
senior Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.), followed by
a sacrifice fly to right by senior Lizzy LeBrun (Rowley,
Mass.) to score junior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham,
Mass.). Le Moyne got one run back in the bottom of the
inning though as Kelly Schweikert launched a
two-out homer to left center for a 2-1 game after one.
In the third, RBI singles by LeBrun and Raylyn Glavin
(Saugus, Mass.), along with a sacrifice fly by freshman
Kylene Pease (Ashland, Mass.), gave the Hawks a
5-1 lead after three. That lead was extended to 8-1 with an
unearned run by McCabe in the fourth and a two-RBI single to right
by McEachern that scored Lauren Galavotti (Marion,
Mass.) and Kryssie Cudmore (Woburn,
Mass.) in the sixth.
Le Moyne put up five runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-6
on a three-run homer by Leah Ford and after
holding the Hawks scoreless in the seventh, headed to the bottom of
the inning trailed by two. The Hawks got the first out before
Demetra Kermidas drove a home run to center to cut
the lead to 8-7, followed by a double to right field from
Amanda Daum. Ford ended the game in her next at
bat though as she hit a two-run homer to left, her second of the
game, to lift the Dolphins to the 9-8 victory.
Saint Anselm starter Megan Lemire (Worcester,
Mass.) went 6.1 innings for the Hawks, scattering 14 hits
with nine runs, eight earned, to go along with three walks and two
strikeouts. Lemire falls to 5-5 overall with the loss.
Jenna Vanacore pitched 4.1 innings in relief for
Le Moyne, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out
four and walking one to improve to 3-3 on the season.
McEachern finished the first game 3-for-3 with two runs scored,
two RBI and a walk, while LeBrun was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one
run scored. Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) also
had two hits, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
In game two, the Hawks again got out to an early lead with one
run in the first, two in the second and three runs in the third.
Galavotti led the offense in that stretch with a two-RBI single to
left in the second. The Dolphins got a pair of homers by Schweikert
and Barbara Shea to cut the lead down to 6-2, but
the Hawks pushed it back to a six-run margin in the top of the
sixth. After Giannino led off with a single up the middle, she came
home on an RBI single by Glavin, while Kat Scafidi (Hudson,
N.H.) scored on a wild pitch for the inning's second run.
Le Moyne hit yet another homer in the sixth as Bailey
Phillips connected on a shot to center, but the Hawks
answered in the seventh with a Giannino home run to left center and
an RBI double by LeBrun that scored Trafton. The Dolphins added a
run in the seventh to account for the 10-4 final.
Senior Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) improved to
3-1 with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just two runs on four
hits. Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) started the
game for the Hawks and went 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits
and two earned runs, but didn't go far enough to pick up the win.
Brenna Klein fell to 4-2 overall for Le Moyne,
going just 1.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on two hits.
Giannino finished the second game 3-for-4 with three runs scored
and one RBI, along with Glavin going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one
run scored.
With the split, Saint Anselm is now 13-13 overall and 6-6 in the
Northeast-10, while Le Moyne drops to 9-13 overall and is 7-5 in
league play. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 3
p.m., traveling to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire for a
Northeast-10 doubleheader.
