Worcester, Mass. (April 10) -- In the longest
game in Saint Anselm history, sophomore Colin Lacey (S.
Hadley, Mass.) scored in the third overtime to lift the
Hawks to a 12-11 win over Assumption. The game is the first
overtime contest for Saint Anselm since the 2008 season.
After taking a 6-4 lead into the third quarter, the Hawks built
the lead up to a four-goal margin at 9-5 with 3:59 left in the
period. Freshman Conor O'Donnell (Smithfield,
R.I.), who finished with a hat trick, scored for the Hawks
off the assist from senior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown,
Mass.). The Greyhounds answered though with two straight
goals from Tom Guido at the end of the third and
Nicholas Violandi early in the fourth to cut the
margin down to 9-7 in favor of the Hawks.
Saint Anselm led by an 11-8 score with 4:41 left before
Connor MacNeil scored twice in 51 seconds and
Guido scored with 54 seconds remaining to send the game into
overtime tied at 11-11.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the Greyhounds nearly took
the game, but thanks to a pair of point-blank saves from Saint
Anselm netminder Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.), the Hawks
stayed in the game to set up the winning score. At the 3:12 mark of
the third overtime, Lacey took a pass from senior Ryan
McDonald (Bow, N.H.) to end the longest game in Saint
Anselm history with a 12-11 victory.
Acone made 13 saves in the win, while Scott
Vogel turned aside 21 shots in the defeat.
With the win, Saint Anselm is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the
Northeast-10, while Assumption falls to 2-5 overall and remains
winless in the Northeast-10 at 0-5. Saint Anselm is back in action
on Tuesday afternoon as the Hawks host Saint Michael's for a 4 p.m.
start at Melucci Field.
