Manchester, N.H. (April 1) -- In the home
opener on Thursday afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball dropped a
pair of games to UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 play. The Hawks fell
by a 9-2 final in game one, followed by a 10-2 game six innings in
the second.
In game one, the River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead thru three
innings before Saint Anselm jumped on the board in the bottom of
the fourth. Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) led off
with a double to left and was pinch-run for by freshman
Kryssie Cudmore (Woburn, Mass.). Cudmore
eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to right by freshman
Kylene Pease (Ashland, Mass.) to make it a 3-1
game. Freshman Amanda Massad (Grafton, Mass.)
walked, followed by a triple to left that went to the fence by
senior Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) to bring
Massad across the plate. McCabe and Kayla McEachern
(Stoneham, Mass.) led the Hawks with two hits each.
Senior Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) took the
loss for the Hawks, going 6.1 innings and allowing 14 hits with
four strikeouts to fall to 2-3 overall. Alyssa Bryan
(Stoneham, Mass.) went seven innings for the River Hawks,
allowing seven hits with five strikeouts to improve to 5-6 overall.
Five River Hawks had multiple hits, led by a 3-for-3 outing with
one run scored and two RBI by Meagan Guy (Berlin,
Conn.).
In the second game, the River Hawks took a 4-0 lead through five
innings with single runs in the second and third and a pair in the
fifth. After scoring six in the top of the sixth inning to make it
a 10-0 score, the Hawks scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth to
account for the 10-2 final. Allyn Doyle (Merrimack,
N.H.) pinch hit and walked before moving to second on a
passed ball and coming home on a double down the left field line by
Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.). Glavin eventually
scored an unearned run on an error by the center fielder.
Five different Hawks had one hit in the game, while
Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) led the River
Hawks with a 3-for-4 showing with four runs batted in and one run
scored. Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) was 2-for-4
with a solo home run as four River Hawks had multiple hits. Boris
pitched six innings, scattering five hits and allowing one earned
run to improve to 3-2 overall. Freshman Shannon Dalton
(Concord, Mass.) went 5.2 for the Hawks, scattering nine
hits and falling to 3-2 on the season.
Saint Anselm falls to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10,
while UMass Lowell is now 9-11 overall and 2-0 in the league. Saint
Anselm returns to action on Saturday afternoon as the team travels
to Bentley for a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
