Waltham, Mass. (April 3) -- The Saint Anselm
softball team snapped its six-game losing streak in a Northeast-10
Conference doubleheader split at Bentley University on Saturday
afternoon. The Hawks took game one by an 8-4 final and fell 5-2 in
the second game.
In game one, the Hawks got on the board in the first inning with
a three-run outburst. Senior Moira McCabe (Brookline,
N.H.) and Kayla McEachern (Stoneham,
Mass.) got things started with back-to-back doubles before
Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) blasted a
three-run homer to left. Bentley cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom
of the third, but the Hawks responded with more runs in the top of
the fourth to push the lead back out to 7-2. Leading in the way in
that inning was a two-RBI double by McCabe as the Hawks took
advantage of a pair of Falcons errors in the frame. Saint Anselm
closed out its scoring with an unearned run in the sixth before
allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Senior Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) got the
start for the Hawks and went 5.2 innings, scattering eight hits and
allowing just two earned runs to improve to 2-1 in the season.
Starter Carly Taitz took the loss for the Falcons,
falling to 3-1 overall.
In the second, Bentley scored twice in the third and three times
in the fifth off Saint Anselm starter Shannon Dalton
(Concord, Mass.) before the Hawks scored a pair in the top
of the seventh. Freshman catcher Lauren Galavotti (Marion,
Mass.) tripled to right center in the seventh,
scoring freshman Amanda Massad (Grafton, Mass.)
and Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine).
Dalton took the loss for Saint Anselm, going 5.0 innings and
allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Senior Megan
Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) pitched a perfect inning in
relief for the Hawks.
With the split, the Hawks are now 8-10 overall and 1-3 in the
Northeast-10, while Bentley is 6-6 overall and 3-1 in league play.
