WINTER PARK, FLA. - The Saint Anselm baseball
team took on the Bentley University Falcons this morning in a
nonconference game held at Rollins College. Sophomore
Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) threw eight shutout
innings, but lost the lead in the ninth, as the Hawks fell to the
Falcons 4-3. The win lifts the Falcons to 3-6 (0-0 NE-10),
while the Hawks sink to 1-7 (0-0 NE-10).
In a true pitcher's duel, the first run did not cross the plate
until the top of the fifth inning. After having allowed just
one hit through 4.2 innings, Rob Finneran allowed
consecutive two-out singles to Rett Ostafin (Avon,
Conn.), Mike Garczynski (Fort Myers,
Fla.), and Joshua Lafond (Goffstown,
N.H.), and the Hawks took a 1-0 lead.
After a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, Matt Sucharewicz
(Peabody, Mass.) got on base in the seventh inning with a
one-out double down the leftfield line. Ostafin followed him
with an RBI single, advancing to second base on the throw to the
plate. Garczynski moved him over to third with a single up
the middle, and Lafond picked up his second RBI of the game,
hustling to beat out the double play on a ground ball to shortstop.
Hawk pitcher Sean Hayden kept the Falcons off the board through
eight shutout innings, allowing just one batter past second
base. He had a 3-0 lead to protect heading into the final
inning, but as his pitch count rose past 90, he began to grow
tired. The inning began with a leadoff triple to centerfield by
Charlie Pagliarulo. James
Roche worked a full-count walk to make it first and
third. Ross Curley hit a ground ball to
third base, but overly eager to turn the double play,
Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) overthrew the
bag, allowing the first run to score with no outs.
Kevin Korwek then hit an RBI single down the
leftfield line to cut the Hawks' lead down to one.
Brett Damato laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to
move the runners to second and third with one out. Hayden
intentionally walked Lamarre Rey to load the
bases, but Mark Lane was the hero of the game, as
he hit a walk-off two-RBI single to down the Hawks 4-3.
The Falcons outhit the Hawks 10-7 in the game. The bottom
of the Hawks' order accounted for all seven hits, while the first
four batters collectively went 0-for-16. Finneran picked up
his second win of the season in the complete game, striking out
nine batters and allowing seven hits and three runs, while Hayden
dropped to 0-2 after 8.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and
striking out four.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow morning to take on Bentley
once again at 11:00 am, followed by a matchup with Stonehill at
2:30 pm.
