Garden City, N.Y. (March 27) -- Saint Anselm
had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Hawks dropped an
11-7 final at Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon in
Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hawks trailed by two late before
the Panthers pulled away for the four-goal victory.
Saint Anselm senior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown,
Mass.) opened the scoring just 1:12 into the first quarter
with his first of four goals on the afternoon. After Mike
Iorio tied things for Adelphi with 12:20 left in the
first, sophomore Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.)
scored eight seconds later to put the Hawks in front 2-1. Two
unanswered goals by the Panthers made it a 3-2 Adelphi lead before
sophomore Colin Lacey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored
with 17 seconds left to make it a 3-3 game after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Adelphi pushed to a 5-3 lead before Saint
Anselm senior All-America candidate Kevin DeBenedetto
(Reading, Mass.) notched an unassisted goal with 1:59 left
to help the Hawks to a 5-4 deficit at the halftime break.
Adelphi made it an 8-4 game and seemed in control heading to the
fourth quarter, but O'Connell ended the third quarter and opened
the fourth with goals to cut the lead down to 8-6 Panthers with
nearly 15 minutes remaining. The Panthers pushed the margin back to
four at 10-6 before O'Connell closed out the Saint Anselm scoring
with 2:27 left. Joe Vitale scored in the final
seconds to account for the 11-7 final in favor of the Panthers.
Junior netminder Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) made
seven saves in the loss.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the
Northeast-10, while Adelphi improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the
league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday, March 30th as
the Hawks host Bentley for a 4 p.m. start at Melucci Field.
