Hawks Tab First NE-10 Win in DH Split at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm baseball team travelled to Albany, N.Y., this afternoon to take on the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader.  The Hawks picked up their first NE-10 win with a 2-1 victory in the first game before dropping the night cap, 6-4.  Today's doubleheader split leaves the Hawks at 3-11 (1-3 NE-10) and the Golden Knights at 5-12 (1-1 NE-10).

Game 1: Saint Anselm 2, Saint Rose 1
After three scoreless innings, Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.) led off the top of the fourth with a single.  He stole second base and advanced to third on a deep fly ball to center off the bat of James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.)Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) then drove him in with a soft grounder to second base, putting the Hawks up 1-0.

The Hawks were kept off the board for the next four innings, but in the top of the ninth, Robert Kelly got the ball rolling with a leadoff double to left-center.  Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) popped out to the shortstop, and then Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) walked to make it first and second.  Mike Garczynski (Fort Myers, Fla.) then loaded the bases with a single to leftfield.  TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.) grounded to the pitcher, who forced out Kelly at home, but Rett Ostafin (Avon, Conn.) made it 2-0 by scoring Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.), who was pinch-running for DeCoste, on a single to the right side.

While the Hawks were only able to produce two runs, John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) pitched his second complete-game of the season, allowing just six hits and one earned run while striking out six en route to his second victory. Donald Potter pitched the first 7.1 innings for the Golden Knights, allowing just one run on three hits, but taking the loss.  Nick Dowen allowed the Hawks' second run in one full inning, and Tom Wiener pitched the last two outs of the ninth, allowing Ostafin's RBI single.

Game 2: Saint Rose 6, Saint Anselm 4
The Golden Knights got off to a lucky start in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first without getting a hit.  Hawk pitcher Myke Fortier (Andover, Mass.) hit leadoff batter Michael CarboneGarret Keenan moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Fortier hit Zachary Halloran to regain the force opportunity.  That didn't last long, however, as Keenan and Halloran pulled off a double steal during Derek Marshall's at-bat.  Carbone scored on John DiBenedetto's (Valrico, Fla.) attempt to throw him out, and after advancing to third on the throw, Halloran scored on Marshall's sacrifice fly.

Grant Smith led off the second inning with a single to right field and went on to steal home to make it 3-0 Golden Knights.   They tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before the Hawks finally got on the board in the seventh inning.  Joshua Lafond (Goffstown, N.H.) led off the inning with a walk.  After Garczynski struck out, David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) walked as well.  Kelly, Murphy, and Panza then hit consecutive one-out singles to score Lafond and Giarrusso, and Richie Manzi then hit a two-out two-RBI single to left field to score Murphy and Panza and bring the Hawks within one run of the Golden Knights.  However, the Hawks were unable to score again, and after Saint Rose added one more in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Golden Knights went on to take a 6-4 victory and split the doubleheader.

Fortier took his first loss of the season, allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks, while striking out four in 5.1 innings.  Kyle Lavin (Shelton, Conn.) pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one run on four hits.  Saint Rose starter Jake Kozar picked up his second win of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits and five walks in 6.2 innings.  Jordan Zareski allowed one hit before getting the final out of the seventh, and Weiner earned his first save, pitching two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 23rd, when they host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
