Hawks Drop Twinbill at Molloy, 5-1 and 5-4

Flushing, N.Y. (March 20) -- In action for the first time in 16 days, the Saint Anselm softball team dropped a twinbill to Molloy in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks dropped game one by a 5-1 final and fell 5-4 in game two.

Game One: Molloy 5, Saint Anselm 1
In game one, the Lions limited the Hawks to just three hits and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Hawks evened things up in the top of the fifth as Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) led off with a single and was doubled in by freshman Amanda Massad (Grafton, Mass.) to tie things at 1-1. Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.) relieved Hawk starter Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) to start the fifth and Fay gave up to four runs on three hits and one error in the fifth as the Lions took the first game by a 5-1 final.

Game Two: Molloy 5, Saint Anselm 4
In game two, the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second and the game remained that way until the top of the seventh when the Hawks put together a furious rally. Junior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) led off with a double to left, followed by a single from Trafton. After freshman Kylene Pease (Ashland, Mass.) drove in McEachern to cut the lead to 2-1, freshman Massad blasted a three-run homer to left to make it a 4-2 Hawk lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. After Molloy flied out to left to start the inning, four straight singles and a walk led the Lions to the win as Caitlin Ortiz scored the winning run off Saint Anselm starter Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 victory. Dalton took the loss, going 6.1 innings and scattering 10 hits with five earned runs and five walks. Six different Hawks got hits, led by the three-RBI showing by Massad.

With the losses, Saint Anselm is now 7-5 overall, while Molloy improves to 10-4. Saint Anselm is back in action on Sunday afternoon, traveling to NYIT for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at Noon in Old Westbury, N.Y.
