Hawks Send Panthers Home Panting in 10-1 Defeat

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team hosted the Plymouth State University Panthers this afternoon at Sullivan Arena.  The Hawks' offense burst open as they skated to a 10-1 victory over the Panthers.  Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored two goals in the game.  The win lifts the Hawks to 12-8-1 (10-4-1 ECAC East), while the Panthers sink to 0-20 (0-15 ECAC East).

The Hawks came out of the gate quickly, netting three goals in the first six minutes of the game.  Giarrusso flipped in the first goal off a pass from Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn, Virg.) at 1:59 in the first period.  Picarello knocked in the second goal at 4:22, assisted by Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.), and Katilin O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.) shoved in a third goal at 5:20 from Giarrusso and Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.).

At the 14 minute mark, Byrne converted a rebound from Picarello and Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) 12 seconds into a Hawk power play to put the Hawks up 4-0.  Four minutes later, Giarrusso scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway drive to give the Hawks a five-goal lead heading into the second period.

At 2:29 in the second, senior co-captain Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.) flipped the puck into the top of the net for Hawk goal number six.  Less than two minutes later, Byrne banked in a second power-play goal off a defenseman's skate to put the Hawks up 7-0.  At 8:44, co-captain Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.) drove in the eighth goal for the Hawks, and at 17:42 in the second, Picarello shoved in her second goal of the game for a 9-0 lead heading into the final period.

At the start of the third period, Panther Lauren Bonanni replaced starter Nicole Provencher in the goal.  At 7:08 in the third, Panther sophomore Michelle Leonard scored her first career goal, assisted by Jenn Bove and Jackie Collins to put the Panthers on the board.  After holding off the Hawks for 17 minutes, Bonanni finally allowed a goal, as Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) tacked on the Hawks' last goal of the game, securing a 10-1 victory.

Provencher made 31 saves and allowed the first nine goals in 40 minutes in the net, and Bonanni made 12 saves in 20 minutes of relief.  Meghan Grant (Melrose, Mass.) made 10 saves in the game for the Hawks and allowed just one goal, to pick up her third win of the season.

The Hawks hit the road next Friday, February 12th, to take on ECAC East rival Manhattanville College.  The Hawks will take on the Valiants in Purchase, N.Y., beginning at 3:00 pm.
