MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team hosted the Plymouth State University Panthers this
afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks' offense burst open as
they skated to a 10-1 victory over the Panthers.
Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.),
Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and
Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored two
goals in the game. The win lifts the Hawks to 12-8-1 (10-4-1
ECAC East), while the Panthers sink to 0-20 (0-15 ECAC East).
The Hawks came out of the gate quickly, netting three goals in
the first six minutes of the game. Giarrusso flipped in the
first goal off a pass from Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn,
Virg.) at 1:59 in the first period. Picarello
knocked in the second goal at 4:22, assisted by Sarah
Ellins (Greeley, Colo.), and Katilin O'Brien
(South Boston, Mass.) shoved in a third goal at 5:20 from
Giarrusso and Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.).
At the 14 minute mark, Byrne converted a rebound from Picarello
and Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) 12 seconds into a
Hawk power play to put the Hawks up 4-0. Four minutes later,
Giarrusso scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway drive
to give the Hawks a five-goal lead heading into the second period.
At 2:29 in the second, senior co-captain Maria Dougherty
(Middletown, R.I.) flipped the puck into the top of the
net for Hawk goal number six. Less than two minutes later,
Byrne banked in a second power-play goal off a defenseman's skate
to put the Hawks up 7-0. At 8:44, co-captain Alexa
Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.) drove in the eighth goal for
the Hawks, and at 17:42 in the second, Picarello shoved in her
second goal of the game for a 9-0 lead heading into the final
period.
At the start of the third period, Panther Lauren
Bonanni replaced starter Nicole
Provencher in the goal. At 7:08 in the third,
Panther sophomore Michelle Leonard scored her
first career goal, assisted by Jenn Bove and
Jackie Collins to put the Panthers on the
board. After holding off the Hawks for 17 minutes, Bonanni
finally allowed a goal, as Michelle Lacombe (Delafield,
Wisc.) tacked on the Hawks' last goal of the game,
securing a 10-1 victory.
Provencher made 31 saves and allowed the first nine goals in 40
minutes in the net, and Bonanni made 12 saves in 20 minutes of
relief. Meghan Grant (Melrose, Mass.) made
10 saves in the game for the Hawks and allowed just one goal, to
pick up her third win of the season.
The Hawks hit the road next Friday, February 12th, to take on
ECAC East rival Manhattanville College. The Hawks will take
on the Valiants in Purchase, N.Y., beginning at 3:00 pm.
