RYE, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey
team traveled to Rye, N.Y., this afternoon to take on the No. 9
Manhattanville College Valiants. The Hawks scored first, but
the Valiants went on a three-goal run to defeat the Hawks
3-1. The win moves the Valiants into a tie with Holy Cross
for first in the ECAC East with a 16-4-1 (14-2-1 ECAC East) record,
while the Hawks fall to 12-9-1 (10-5-1 ECAC East).
After a scoreless first period, Kristen Byrne (Duxbury,
Mass.) struck first for the Hawks, netting a pass from
Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) at 1:33 in the
second to give the Hawks the first lead of the game. Five
minutes later, at 6:29, freshman Katie Little
knocked in her 20th goal of the season on a power play to knot the
score at one.
At 14:42 in the second, Little slapped in a second goal for the
Valiants to put Manhattanville up 2-1. The Hawks fought to
make a comeback, but at 12:06 in the third, Shannon
Coffey netted a third goal for the Valiants to secure a
3-1 victory.
Saint Anselm goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) made 29 saves in the game, and her Manhattanville
counterpart Sophia Kokkonis turned aside 17
shots. The Hawks return to action tomorrow night, when they
take on the Salve Regina University Seahawks in an ECAC East
Conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
