Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Comrie's Late Goal Gives Hawks 3-1 Victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team hosted the University of Southern Maine Huskies this evening for their second match-up of the season.  The game was tied for a majority of the game, but midway through the third, the Hawks took the lead and held onto it for a 3-1 victory over the Huskies.  The Hawks improve to 11-8-1 (9-4-1 ECAC East), while the Huskies drop to 7-11-2 (5-9 ECAC East).

The first half of the game was scoreless, but at 10:27 in the second period, a Hawk tripping penalty sent Danielle Ward to center ice for a penalty shot.  Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) did her best to guard the net, but Ward got by her, scoring the first goal of the game.   During the next Hawk possession, Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) took a shot from out in front of the goal which got past the body of goaltender Kimmy Flanders, but she spun around and just barely knocked the puck out of the way with her stick to protect the Huskies' lead.

At 17:22 in the second, Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) sent at quick pass to Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) right in front of the net, who flipped it up and over Flanders to tie the game at one heading into the third period.  The game remained tied for the first half of the final period, until at 10:54, Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn, Virg.) took a shot from out front, which ricocheted off Flanders and into the net to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.  The Hawks held onto their one-goal lead into the final minute of play, and with 50 seconds remaining in regulation, the Huskies took out Flanders and sent in an extra attacker.  32 seconds later, at 19:42, senior Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.) won the puck near the blue line and slipped an empty-net goal past the Huskies' defense to secure the Hawks a 3-1 victory.

The Hawks' offense dominated in the game, outshooting the Huskies 48-19.  Husky Kimmy Flanders made 45 saves in the game, and Amy Zappen stopped 18 shots for the Hawks.  The Hawks conclude their homestand tomorrow afternoon, when they host the Panthers of Plymouth State University in an ECAC East Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
