Penalty-Ridden Third Costs Hawks Lead in 4-3 Final

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team hosted the No. 10 Manhattanville College Valiants this evening in their second matchup of the season.  While Hawks had the largest lead of the game, a penalty-ridden third period gave the Valiants an advantage, as they pulled away with a 4-3 victory.  The win lifts the Valiants to 17-6-1 (15-1-2 ECAC East), while the Hawks fall to 13-10-1 (11-6-1 ECAC East).

The first period was scoreless, but just 24 seconds in the second, freshman Katie Little flipped in her 22nd goal of the season to put the Valiants up 1-0.  A Manhattanville tripping penalty at 3:19 in the second gave the Hawks an advantage, and just 17 seconds into the power play, Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.) netted a slap shot from near the blue line, to tie the game at one.  Midway through the second at 11:26, Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) set up Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) close to the net, who shoved the puck through goaltender Sophia Kokkonis's legs to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

At 7:24 in the third period, senior Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.) pushed in Rosemarie Giarrusso's (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) rebound, jumping the Hawks up 3-1.  However, the Hawks would go on to commit six penalties, including one five-minute major offense, forcing the team to be at full strength for just four of the final fifteen minutes of play.  During that penalty-ridden span, the Valiants went on a dominating scoring run, netting three power-play goals and taking a 4-3 lead.  Jackie Solomito netted the first goal at 7:41, just five seconds into the first Valiant power play.  At the 12 minute mark, Shannon Coffey knocked in a 5-on-3 goal, and at 14:31, Lauren Nutkevitch netted the game-winner, handing the Valiants a 4-3 comeback victory.

Hawk goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 28 saves in the game, and her Valiant counterpart, Sophia Kokkonis, turned aside 17 shots.  The Hawks conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon, when they host the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons in their final game at Sullivan Arena.  The game will begin at 3:00 pm.
