MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's
hockey team hosted the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons
this afternoon in their final game of the 2009-2010 regular
season. The Hawks ended the season just as they began it,
claiming a shutout victory with Amy Zappen (Huntington
Beach, Calif.) in the goal. The 3-0 victory lifts
the Hawks to 14-10-1 (12-6-1 ECAC East), while the Beacons fall to
16-9 (13-6 ECAC East). The Beacons end the season just one
point ahead of the Hawks, who finish in fourth and fifth place,
respectively in the conference standings.
The Hawks got started quickly, as Daniella Lyons
(Greene, Maine) slapped a crossing shot from the left side
towards goaltender Leah Hallett at 5:29 in the
first. Hallett blocked the shot, but the puck dropped free right in
front of the goal where Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm
Beach, Fla.) was camped out, who tapped in the rebound to
give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
The Hawks struck again in the fifth minute of the second period,
as Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) banked in
Molly Corl's (Danvers, Mass.) rebound during a
power play to put the Hawks up by two. Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) laced in a third Hawk goal at
12:07 in the second, to give the Hawks a 3-0 victory.
The Hawks dominated the Beacons throughout the game, outshooting
them 44-16, including 14-2 in the first period alone. Hawk
goaltender Amy Zappen made 16 saves in the game and picked up her
fifth career shutout victory to finish the regular season with an
8-7-1 record. Leah Hallet stopped 41 shots in the game,
taking the loss.
The Hawks will play their final two games of the year next
weekend, when they travel to Worcester, Mass., to participate in
the ECAC Open Tournament featuring Sacred Heart, Saint Michael's
and the host team, Holy Cross. The first round games will be
played at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 27th, and the
championship and consolation games will be held on Sunday.
The official tournament seeding has yet to be announced, but the
Hawks will most likely face Sacred Heart (7-16-1) in the first
round.
