Purchase, N.Y. (November 6) -- In their most closely contested game of the 2010 season, the Saint Anselm Hawks women's ice hockey team fell on the road this evening to the Valiants of Manhattanville, 3-1.
The scoring did not get underway until midway through the second period. Manhattanville struck first on a goal by Katie Little (Victoria, B.C.) with 9:30 remaining in the period. The goal was Little's third of the season.
The Hawks answered right back with roughly seven minutes left in the period on Kristen Byrne's (Duxbury, Mass.) second goal of the young season. Less than a minute later, Haleigh Hutchinson (Southgate, Mich.) tied the game for the Valiants on a pass from Little.
Little added her second goal of the game late in the third period to put the game out of the Hawks reach.
The Hawks lost the faceoff statistic 34-23, which helped propel Manhattanville to the victory.
Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 28 saves in net for the Hawks, allowing the three goals. Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) led the Hawks with five shots, while Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) took four shots.
The Hawks who are now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ECAC East return to action for their first home game, next Friday, November 12th against Salve Regina. The win improves the Valiants record to 2-0 overall.
