Comeback Falls Short in Loss to No. 10 Ravens

Manchester, N.H. (November 28) -- Saint Anselm rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit to cut the lead to six in the final minutes before dropping a 68-58 final to No. 10 ranked Franklin Pierce on Sunday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.

Saint Anselm trailed by a 32-14 margin at halftime after turning the ball over 14 times in the opening 20 minutes. The Hawks pulled things together in the second half and cut the lead down to 46-34 with 11:45 left after a layup from sophomore Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.). After the Ravens pushed the lead back up to 18 at 60-42 with 6:58 remaining, the Hawks embarked on a 14-2 run over the next 5:13 to make it a 62-56 game with just over a minute left. Franklin Pierce knocked down six free throws in the final minute to seal the game and hold off the furious Hawk comeback.

Leading the offense was junior guard Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark.) with 14 points and three assists, while freshman Meg Morrissey (So. Kingstown, R.I.) had eight points, four assists and three steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Junior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) nearly posted a double-double as she ended up with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.) led three Ravens in double figures with 17 points, including a 7-for-8 showing at the free throw line. Tiffany Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.) added 14 points, while Marielle Giroud (Martigny, Switzerland) finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Ravens improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Wednesday, December 1 as the Hawks travel to Stonehill College for a 5:30 p.m. start at Merkert Gym.
