Northfield, Vt. (November 21) -- On a very late overtime goal this afternoon, the Saint Anselm Hawks women's ice hockey team fell to Norwich University 3-2. Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored in her second straight game despite the loss.
The Hawks were outshot on net 30-19 on target through the entirety of the game.
The first goal was scored with 5:17 remaining in the first period, when Renee Lortie (Cornwell, Ont.) scored her third goal of the season for Norwich, which was the only goal of the first period. The Hawks picked up two penalties in the period, which were killed and Norwich was unable to capitalize.
Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored her fifth goal of the season, which leads the team, on passes from Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) and Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.). The goal came just two-and-a-half minutes into the second period.
Sarianne Lynn (Wethersfield, Conn.) opened the third period scoring for Norwich to give the Cadets a 2-1 lead, which was quickly countered by Saint Anselm's Zappen, who scored with six minutes left on the clock. The goal was unanswered, sending the game into overtime.
In the last possible second of the game, Jullayne DeBus (Howell, Mich.) scored the game winner, giving Norwich their seventh win of the season, improving their record to 7-1 overall, and 6-0 in the ECAC East.
Meghan Grant (Melrose, Mass.) made 27 saves in the loss for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm falls to 4-3 overall, and 3-3 in the ECAC East after the loss. They will take to the ice again following the Thanksgiving break on Friday, December 3rd at home. The game will feature Williams College at 7:00 pm in the Sullivan Arena.
