Hawks Drop First Game of the Season, 46-31

Manchester, N.H. (November 20) -- The Saint Anselm women's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2010-2011 season on Saturday afternoon as the Hawks fell to visiting Felician College by a 46-31 final at Al Grenert Court at Stoutenburgh Gym. The game was the third non-conference game of the year for the Hawks.

In a turnover-plagued first half, it was Saint Anselm that jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over the first 4:35 of the game. The Golden Falcons answered with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes though and took a 10-8 lead on a layup by Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 9:14 left in the period. The Hawks tied the game at 12-12 on a layup by sophomore Morgan Frame (Waterville, Maine), but that was close as Saint Anselm got as the Golden Falcons took the 19-14 edge into the half. Quay Baskerville (Hartford, Conn.) led all scorers in the half with 10 points for the Golden Falcons, while Frame led Saint Anselm with four points and Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) had six rebounds.

Felician kept the pressure on in the second half and midway thru the period, it was a 21-point lead for the Golden Falcons at 40-19. Saint Anselm closed the game to within 11 points with the inspired play off the bench from freshmen Hilary Lumpkins (Boerne, Texas), Vanessa D'Ambrosi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Mariah Wynn (Boston, Mass.). The trio combined for 10 points and three assists in the final minutes of the game.

Frame led the team with seven points, while Howard was the team's leading rebounder with 12 rebounds. Baskerville led all scorers with a 21-point effort. The Hawks outrebounded the Golden Falcons by a 43-30 margin in the game, but Saint Anselm was undone by 31 turnovers in the defeat.

The loss snaps a three-game, season-opening win streak for the Hawks, who fall to 3-1 overall with today's setback. Felician is now even at 1-1 overall.

Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday night as the Hawks hit the road to Bentley to take on the Falcons in Northeast-10 Conference play. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass.
