Fairfield, Conn. (October 30th) -- Opening their season this afternoon, the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team was in action against the Sacred Heart Pioneers on the road. The Hawks saw six different goal scorers to pull out a 6-4 win on a Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) game-winning goal.
The Hawks jumped on the score board early, when Jamie Comrie (Ashburn, Va.) scored just three minutes in, giving the Hawks their first goal of the season. Sacred Heart tied the game with 13:22 on the clock, but Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored 11 seconds later for Saint Anselm to take the lead again at 2-1. Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season with two minutes left to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission. Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) totaled eight saves in the first period.
The Hawks kept up the same intensity into the second period, getting a goal 10 minutes in from Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.), giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead. 30 seconds later, Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, Minn.) scored her second goal of the game for the Pioneers, cutting the Hawks lead in half.
Ellins' game winner came with just over 16 minutes left in the game on an unassisted goal. Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) became the Hawks sixth goal scorer of the game with 7:28 left in the game.
Giarrusso assisted on three of the Hawks goals in the game.
The Hawks, who are now 1-0-0, will play again next Friday at Nichols College. The puck will drop at 7:40 pm.
