Wenham, Mass. (October 2) --
The Saint Anselm men's and women's cross country teams took part in
the Pop Crowell Invitational, hosted by Gordon College. The women's
team placed in fourth out of 26 teams, while the men's team was
fifth out of 23 teams as the two squads put together one of their
top performances in 2010.
In the women's race, the Hawks were led by freshman
Katharine Meinertz (Smithfield, R.I.) as she
placed third in a time of 18:55 in her best time of the season. The
two-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week was the top freshman
runner at the meet and was just eight seconds back of the winner as
she ran a 6:06 pace. Junior Bianca Ciuffredo (Worcester,
Mass.) was close behind in 19:29 to finish in fifth place.
Freshmen occupied the next four spots for the Hawks, led by
Stephanie Kearsley (Manchester, N.H.) in 16th
place in 19:58 and Joanna Marczyk (Stratford,
Conn.) in 17th place in the same time of 19:58.
As a team, the Hawks finished with 121 points and were two
points behind third-place Wellesley College.
For the men, the team was paced by a 17th place finish by
Kevin
Soucey (Windham, N.H.) in a time of 27:37, running at
a 5:34 pace. Drew Matthews
(Madison, Conn.) was next in 19th place in 27:39, followed
by Christopher
Powers (Haverhill, Mass.) in 23rd place with a time of
27:50. John Surabian
(Saugus, Mass.) finished 56th in 28:44, while Benjamin Fox
(Unity, Maine) closed out the scoring runners for the
Hawks in 89th place in a time of 29:36.
As a team, the Hawks placed fifth with a total of 171 points on
the afternoon.
