Manchester, N.H. (January 9) -- Winning for the
fifth time in the last six games, Saint Anselm continued its hot
streak with a thrilling 56-55 win over Adelphi on Saturday
afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym. The Hawks improve to 6-7 overall and
3-6 in the Northeast-10 with the home victory. With the loss,
Adelphi is 2-11 overall and a winless 0-9 in the league.
Adelphi hit its first three shots of the game and held an 8-4
edge with 16:38 left in the first half. Saint Anselm took the lead
on a three-pointer from senior Erin Higgins (Mansfield,
Mass.) just minutes later though and aside from one tie
score, the Hawks held the lead for the remainder of the game. In
the first half, the Hawk lead swelled to as many as nine points
before the hosts took a 31-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Hawks pushed the lead to 11 at 39-28
before a quick 9-0 run make it just a two-point game with 10:05
left after a three-point play from Theresa Foley (Lake
Grove, N.Y.). The Hawks got the lead back up to six on a
Higgins' three with 2:06 left and used five free throws and a
three-pointer down the stretch to seal the win.
Senior Courtney May (Lakeville, Mass.) had a
10-point, 13-rebound double-double as four Hawks were in double
figures. Sophomore Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.)
led all scorers with 16 points, along with 10 from Higgins and an
11-point effort from junior Jen Gureckis (Nashua,
N.H.).
Kara Tancredi (Beacon, N.Y.) had 13 points,
along with 11 points from Ashley Caiafa (Massapequa Park,
N.Y.) for the Panthers.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Tuesday, January 12th as the
team travels to Pace for a 5:30 p.m. start in Pleasantville, N.Y.
