MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint
Anselm women's ice hockey team began its second half of the
2009-2010 campaign at home against Syracuse University this
afternoon. The Hawks were defeated by the Orange by a score
of 7-2, giving the Hawks just their third loss of the season.
The Orange jumped on top quickly in the first period, seeing two
goals in the first four minutes. The first goal was netted just 31
seconds into the contest when Holly Carrie-Mattimoe
(Sherwood, park, Alb.) received a pass just inches in
front of the net from Isabel Menard (Ottawa, Ont.)
for a one-timer goal. The second goal was scored by
Julie Rising (Anchorage, Alaska) on a cross-ice
pass. At 12:45, Syracuse tallied its third goal of the game on a
shot that found the right side of the net by Menard.
Carrie-Mattimoe returned the favor to Menard, as she assisted on
the goal.
Just three minutes and thirty-five seconds into the second
period, Kylie Klassen (Winkler, Manitoba)
added a goal by redirecting a shot from
Carrie-Mattimoe. Midway through the period, Syracuse made a goalie
change, sending in Stephanie Jones (Thronhill,
Ont.) who had to make just one save.
The Hawks started the third period on a much better note,
collecting their first goal of the game just one minute and ten
seconds into the period on a goal by Aly Zappen (Huntington
Beach, Calif.) from just outside the right penalty circle
at a tough angle. Just 57 seconds later, Kristen Byrne
(Duxbury, Mass.) would add to the Hawk tally as she
collected her fifth goal of the season.
The Hawk run would be cut short when Menard scored her second
goal of the game on a one-timer that just went by Saint Anselm
goalie Amy Zappen's (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
right foot five minutes later. The Orange kept their run going when
at 11:18 Jessica Sorensen (Ingersoll, Ont.) scored
on a breakaway goal, and then at 14:53, Lisa Mullen
(Victoria, British Columbia) added another to cap the
Orange scoring.
Zappen made 31 saves for Saint Anselm in the loss for the Hawks.
Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) made eight saves in
30 minutes getting the win. Jones, who played the remaining 30
minutes of the game, made seven saves for the Orange.
The win brings the Syracuse record to 13-8-1 (5-2 CHA), while
the Hawks fall to 7-3-1 (6-3-1 ECAC East). The Hawks return to the
ice tomorrow, January 9, 2010, to host Colby College at 1:00
